Australia's authorities have suspended the hunt for a four-year-old who has been disappeared in the wilderness for almost three weeks, after fresh operations proved unsuccessful to locate any signs of the child.

Chronology of Events

The child was spotted enjoying himself outside his home on a remote sheep station near Yunta, about a significant distance from Adelaide, on late September.

His grandmother briefly departed for about a short period before returning, only to realize the child missing, triggering one of the largest comprehensive searches in the region's past.

Current Situation

Authorities - who do not suspect foul play - say they will carry on examining, but that the situation has become a "recovery mission".

Last week, authorities for a short time scaled back the hunt, only to recommence it on this week alongside eighty Australian Defense Force members.

"Commissioner the commissioner said officials were looking a wider area based on new assessments from survivability and search professionals, rather than any recent developments."

Search Challenges

On Friday, officials announced that the latest hunt had not uncovered any traces of the child.

"The situation that the young boy is a little boy, the terrain is extremely difficult, challenging and affected by changing elements has made the mission challenging and more complex for those involved," officials said in a release.

About 470 square kilometers - an zone approximately twice the dimensions of a major city - has now been scanned, and a 12-person team established recently is projected to carry on investigating. Authorities have not excluded more missions of the property in the future.

The child, who has been described as an adventurous but quiet boy, was observed clothed in a gray cap, pale gray pants, footwear and a blue full-sleeve T-shirt featuring a yellow Minion character.

The incident has provoked significant interest across Australia, with pictures of the fair-haired, wavy-haired youngster shown across regional news and discussion running rife online.

It caused police to request that individuals stop calling them with their "theories", and urge for them to obtain information from credible sources.

Relatives Reaction

Officials earlier this week said the youngster's family remain "stoic" despite the tragic situation.

"One can understand just how they are feeling... without having information as to specifically where the boy is and what's occurred to him. This would be heartbreaking for every loved ones," Official the commissioner said.

Via a family representative, the Lamont loved ones has before said they are "heartbroken" by the child's loss.

"This has come as a trauma to our household and acquaintances, and we are struggling to process what has happened," a family representative said.

"Gus's absence is noticed in all of us, and we miss him exceeding words can convey."
