FAI Approves Resolution Seeking European Football Ban on Israel
Ireland's football governing body has given the green light to present a formal motion to Uefa, calling for the exclusion of Israeli football from continental team and national competitions.
Basis of the Proposed Suspension
This motion, that had been put forward by Dublin club Bohemians, cited claimed violations by the Israel Football Association of two important European football regulations.
- Failure to implement and enforce an effective policy against racism.
- Establishment of football teams in occupied Palestinian territories lacking the consent of the Palestrian FA.
Ballot Results and Future Actions
According to an official statement from the FAI, the proposal was backed by 74 votes, with 7 against and two abstentions.
They intends to officially present this motion to the UEFA's decision-making body, seeking the prompt ban of the IFA from European tournaments.
During a special assembly of the Football Association of Ireland, an standard motion was posed to members. It passed by a majority.
Previous European Deliberations
The European body had earlier put on hold plans to ban Israel at the close of last month, following the announcement of a US peace proposal for the area.
While Uefa never officially confirmed considering an special session on the issue, preparations were understood to be quite advanced.
International Backdrop
This Irish resolution comes after comparable calls in September from the leaders of Turkish and Norwegian football associations for Israel's suspension from global football.
Those requests were issued after United Nations experts asked world and European football bodies to suspend Israel, referencing a UN investigation that claimed Israel of acts of genocide during the Gaza conflict.
Israel has denied these claims and described the findings as scandalous.
Potential Consequences
Should Uefa decide to ban the IFA, it would likely strain relations with the US administration – joint hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which strongly opposes such an measure.
Even though Uefa has the power to suspend Israeli teams from its tournaments, it may not be able to prevent them from taking part in World Cup qualifiers, which is governed by world football's governing body.
