One-time public official found guilty of sexually abusing two victims encountered via work has been sentenced to nearly six years in jail.

Legal Proceedings

The former official, forty-four, has been in custody since July after a jury convicted him of sexually assaulting a victim and indecently assaulting another individual, in multiple events in over two years.

Ward represented the coastal town of the regional area in the state parliament from 2011. He stepped down as a government official when allegations came to light in 2021 but refused to quit the legislature and was re-elected in 2023.

Judgment Information

Judge the judicial figure took into account the defendant's condition of sight disability in the ruling and found "no other penalty except for imprisonment could be considered".

The convicted individual, who appeared via digital means at the courthouse, will undergo at least 45 months in custody before he can apply for parole.

The court official declared the judicial system needs to "issue a clear statement to potential criminals that illegal behaviors such as this will be faced with salutary penalties".

Further Details

She also said the defendant had "evaded consequences for ten years and experienced freedom absent a rehabilitation program or punishment for his actions during that time".

Following the verdict, Ward initiated a rejected legal bid to continue in government and stepped down shortly before the members could remove him.

His legal team has stated earlier he aims to challenge the guilty verdict.

Case Facts

The defendant's extended court case in the state court heard that he invited a drunk teenager to his home in the first incident and sexually abused him on multiple occasions, despite the victim's efforts to fight back.

Two years later, he raped a mid-twenties office worker at his residence after a gathering at the legislature.

He had claimed the 2015 rape never occurred, and that the first victim was inaccurate regarding their encounter from 2013.

However, prosecutors maintained that significant resemblances in the statements of the individuals, who did not know one another, demonstrated they were being honest.

Court members considered for multiple days before returning the guilty verdicts.

Ward's resignation led to a by-election in the district in last fall, which was secured by the challenger.
