Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Team While Joe McCarthy Omitted
Returning manager the Ireland coach has named skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall matches, but Joe McCarthy misses out.
The captain, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on November 1.
Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the first British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.
Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are also absent due to injury, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation following the summer tour.
Dublin province prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new player in the 34-man group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "cover".
Following facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented the coach, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is remains available, as the two players set to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's URC game at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen as the coach deciding not to selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield choices. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at number 15.
Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Ireland pack. The front rower has been in a couple of his province's three United Rugby Championship games this season and played in the second string's loss by England in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a cap.
Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province lock Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris should the skipper does not regain fitness in time to play the All Blacks.
The national team will meet in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on Tuesday.
