A Heartbreaking Shift Just One Year Has Brought in America
In late October 2024, the situation was completely distinct. Prior to the US presidential election, thoughtful residents could admit the country's serious imperfections – its injustices and imbalance – but they still could see it as America. A free society. A place where constitutional order held significance. A country guided by a respectable and ethical leader, notwithstanding his elderly years and increasing frailty.
These days, this autumn, countless Americans barely recognize the country we live in. People alleged as undocumented migrants are collected and forced into vehicles, at times blocked from fair treatment. The left side of the White House – is being destroyed to build a lavish dance hall. The president is targeting his adversaries or perceived antagonists and insisting the justice department surrender a huge total of citizen dollars. Armed military personnel are being sent across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, renamed the Defense Ministry, has practically liberated itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny while it uses what could amount to nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Colleges, legal practices, news companies are yielding from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are treated like aristocracy.
“America, just months before its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the limit into authoritarianism and fascism,” Garrett Graff, commented in August. “In the end, more quickly than I imagined possible, it occurred here.”
Every morning starts with fresh terrors. And it is challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – how severely declined we are, and the speed at which it unfolded.
However, we understand that the president was properly voted in. Following his deeply disturbing initial presidency and following the cautions associated with the knowledge of the conservative plan – following the leader directly declared plainly he planned to be a dictator only on the first day – sufficient voters elected him over the other candidate.
While alarming as today's circumstances is, it’s even scarier to realize that we are just three-quarters of a year into this presidential term. Where will another 36 months of this decline find us? And suppose that timeframe becomes something even longer, since there is no one to limit this president from determining that another term is essential, perhaps for national security reasons?
Granted, there is still hope. There will be legislative votes in 2026 which might create a new political equilibrium, in case Democrats regain the Senate or House of the legislature. There exist government representatives who are striving to exert certain responsibility, like lawmakers that are launching an investigation regarding the effort to cash appropriation from legal authorities.
And a presidential election in 2028 could initiate our journey to healing precisely as the previous vote placed us on this regrettable path.
There exist countless citizens protesting in public spaces throughout communities, as they did in the past days at democracy demonstrations.
An ex-cabinet member, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of America is stirring”, similar to past post-McCarthyism in that decade or during the sixties activism or during the Watergate scandal.
During those times, the unstable nation eventually was righted.
The author states he understands the signals of that awakening and notices it unfolding at present. As evidence, he points to the large-scale demonstrations, the widespread, multi-faction opposition regarding a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal rejection by reporters to accept the defense department’s demands they report only approved content.
“The sleeping giant consistently stays dormant till some venality becomes so noxious, a particular deed so offensive of the common good, certain violence so noisy, that the giant is forced but to awaken.”
It’s an optimistic take, and I respect the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may turn out correct.
In the meantime, the crucial issues persist: will the nation regain its footing? Can it reclaim its standing internationally and its adherence to the rule of law?
Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment succeeded temporarily, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?
My negative thoughts suggests that the latter is true; that everything might be lost. My optimistic spirit, however, tells me that we need to strive, by any means available.
For me, working in journalism analysis, that involves urging journalists to adhere, more completely, to their purpose of scrutinizing authority. For some people, it could mean participating in election efforts, or organizing rallies, or finding ways to safeguard ballot privileges.
Under twelve months back, we were in a separate situation. In the future? Or three years from now? The fact is, we don’t know. Our sole course is try to persevere.
